Abstract: The Athletic Department records consist of items provided by the University of St. Francis Athletic Department. The materials include DVDs, photographs, scholarship and athletic curriculum proposals, policies, correspondences, contracts, and a figurine of Gordon "Gordie" Gillespie.

History: The Athletic Department was established by Coach Gordon "Gordie" Gillespie (1926-2015) and Pat Sullivan. They distinguished the department by vigorously recruiting student athletes and establishing prodigious reputations, which made the program recognizable. Gillespie started the College of St. Francis women's basketball team in 1976, football team in 1985, and became the football head coach in 1986. He was also the head coach for men's baseball, Athletic Director, Athletic Chairman, a three time president of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Baseball Coaches Association and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) coach of the year four times. Pat Sullivan was the men's basketball head coach, hall of famer, Athletic Director, and Athletic Chairman for 34 years.

The Athletic Department is associated with the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), and Mid-State Football Association (MSFA) which regulates athletes, conferences, and organizes college and university level athletic programs. Currently, the athletic department has a total of 12 sports including one co-ed team. There are four facilities that the department utilizes which include the Harlow Lockwood Softball Field, the Joliet Memorial Field, the Pat Sullivan Center/Rec Center, and the Silver Cross Field.
