Abstract: The Dr. Marcia Jean Carter Papers contains the personal papers of Recreation Therapy professor Dr. Marcia Jean Carter, CPRP, CTRS. She is an adjunct professor at the University of St. Francis and permanent faculty at Western Illinois University-Quad Cities in Moline, Illinois. Dr. Carter was instrumental in the creation of accreditation for the recreation therapy profession and has published numerous books and journal articles on the subject.

Dr. Carter has served as President of the American Association for Leisure and Recreation (AALR) and the National Therapeutic Recreation Society (NTRS); she has also been the chair of the profession’s credentialing bodies: the Council on Accreditation of Parks, Recreation, Tourism, and Related Professions, the National Certification Board, and the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification.

Types of material: The Dr. Marcia Jean Carter Papers consists of material detailing the registration and credentialing developments of the recreation therapy profession. Included are speeches delivered by Dr. Carter at various conferences, such as: National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA), National Therapeutic Recreation Society (NTRS), and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD).

There is information concerning the formation of the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC), including: standards and evaluations, surveys and questionnaires, sample applications, and bylaws.
